AHA’s: What are they + Why are they necessary in your skin routine?

I am in no way claiming to be a skincare expert or professional, but I do take pride in being pretty educated on SKIN!

After years and years of testing out products and brands, reading up on my favorite beauty bloggers and keeping up with the trends, AHA’s have come up A LOT. Before I knew what they were, it was just some silly little acronym that I was too lazy to look into. But now, my skincare routine would be nothing without them!

Let me start off by explaining what the f AHA’s actually are. It stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acid – I know, sounds a little scary. Although it sounds like a chemical, AHA’s are actually derived from natural occurring ingredients in our environment, like sugarcane, milk & even grapes!

Why are they so great, you may ask? You guys all know how much I love to exfoliate. AHA’s are the ultimate exfoliator. Not saying they are the harshest and roughest – that’s not the case. I mean they do a great job at actually turning skin cells over and rejuvenating your skin. After that exfoliation happens, you reveal your fresh and smooth skin and at the same time, hydrate.

There are many different kinds of AHA’s – like glycolic acid, lactic acid, even citric acid. But, if it is a main ingredient in a skincare product, they will most likely promote that on the packaging.

I want to share with you my favorites & recommendations for great AHA products. Depending on your budget, there are great choices at all price ranges.

Low Price Range: $10 and under

The Ordinary AHA Peeling Solution – $7.20, image via Sephora
elf SuperTone AHA Toner – $8, image via elf cosmetics

I’ve recently been trying out this toner and LOVE the way it’s making my skin look & feel! It has cleared my hormonal acne, made my skin glow & has removed any dead skin. Highly recommend as an inexpensive option.

Mid Price Range – $30 and under

Glossier Exfoliating Skin Perfector – $24

These peel pads are seriously one of my holy grail products that I’ll never give up. They have transformed my skin and it’s texture. In just two minutes, your skin is left glowy and exfoliated – they’re my favorite on-the-go treatment.

High Price Range – $80 and up

Alright, if you’ve gotten more money to blow – or you’re a luxury products kind of person, this is for you. I’ve tried Sephora samples of these next two products and I recommend you do the same before pulling the trigger – you never know how your skin will react.

Well, there you have it! I hope you found some great options for your specific price range. As always, if you have super sensitive skin, AHA’s might be too harsh for your skin. Always patch test on your specific skin or ask your dermatologist! Since this is such an exfoliating product, I urge you to always apply sunscreen if you plan on getting any sun exposure after use!

Remember kids – getting dead skin off your face & turning those skin cells over is essential if you’re trying to prevent signs of aging. AHA’s have changed the game for me & I hope they do for you!

Until next time…
